Medical Research

Peninsula Medical School Foundation works to bring together the power of the larger medical charities, the generosity of the individual donors and the fundraising enthusiasm and commitment of our local volunteers. This innovative programme has resulted in over £2 million being raised for medical research in the past three years. We really need your help NOW to continue to produce world class research here in Devon and Cornwall.

Research within the Peninsula Medical School reflects the health priorities of our society. Building on existing expertise and strong academic and NHS partnerships, the School's research strategy is characterized by focus and the development of niche areas within which unique contributions can be made. University partners and the health community form a network of coordinated research activity across the Peninsula. This work builds on existing strengths within the region and develops collaboration and integration between disciplines.

School research is being carried out in the fields of biomedical research, clinical education and health services research; areas which map NHS needs and priorities. Specific research programmes include diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis, stroke, the interaction between genes and the environment and better ways of delivering services. Foundation is concerned with raising funds principally for biomedical research.

Biomedical and Clinical Science

The biomedical research strategy is aligned with Research Council priorities. The key areas of research are genetics, diabetes, vascular physiology and ageing, immunology and inflammation, biophysics, bioengineering, neurosciences and environmental influences on health.

Health Service Research

Health service research is driven in large part by the needs of the NHS for good quality evidence on which to base policy and procedure. Research staff are involved in health technology assessment, systematic reviews, clinical trials, evaluation of health services and of complex interventions and analysis of patterns of population health.
